Swinging wet flies |
| The fishing was very good with lots of fish in the river. I was teaching a Steelhead class of five clients for the Fly Fishing Shop, Welches. We camped at "Moth camp" and during the four days of fishing 42 fish were hooked and 28 landed, mostly hatchery fish between 6lb and 8lb. The river was particularly busy with anglers and this showed in the reluctance of fish to take again, once an angler had gotten a pull. The usual tactic of changing fly, moving upstream of the fish and going over it again rarely worked. My most memorable fish was an 8lb native fish that took in a really nasty wading pool, with obstructions tight behind and overhead. The fish took half way through the swing and tore off downstream taking about 50 yards of backing on its first run. The fish had taken a Lady Carolyn tied off the dropper. I used the new Sage 6126-4 Z-axis rod, rigged with a 5/6 WindCutter line with a 15ft intermediate tip. |

An 8lb native fish that knew how to fight! A spey cast is essential here! Roughing it on the riverbank! Before the trip... wondering if anyone will catch anything at all... Another Dechutes fish comes to the bank Bighorn sheep on a hill overlooking the camp site Brian Silvery lands a cracking native fish!
